  • One View of Copenhagen –
    (1 February 2010) The recent climate action meeting held in December in Copenhagen was doomed to disappoint given the severe economic downturn in the developed world in 2008 and 2009. The ability of the U.S. to move ahead with significant action on cap-and-trade has also been thwarted by economic reality of U.S. budget projections. The current U.S. budget proposal does not include revenues that would derive from a cap-and-trade bill. As a result, other strategies are warranted such as those summarized by John Friedman who first notes how the U.S. experience with health care reform informs on how to approach environmental legislation with: 1)  transparency, 2) tolerance for misinformed opposition, 3) building public awareness, and 4) adopting a sustainability mindset.
